ST. PAUL – State Rep. Pat Garofalo (R-Farmington) said he was delighted that $10 million was set aside in the Minnesota House bonding bill for the Cedar Avenue Bus Rapid Transit project. The legislation, co-authored by Garofalo, would grant authority to the Dakota County Regional Railroad Authority to plan, construct and run the bus service along the Cedar Avenue corridor.
“I have been advocating for this bill since I was elected to the Legislature in November,” said Garofalo, member of the House Capital Investment Committee. “The Cedar rapid bus way is a big piece of the puzzle to help ease traffic congestion in the south metro area.”
Some $10 million is slated for the project in the House bonding bill, same as requested by Gov. Tim Pawlenty. One stumbling block is that funding for the project is not included in the Minnesota Senate’s bonding bill.
Garofalo said he was pleased with the overall balance in the $816 million House bonding legislation. It addresses key legislative priorities – higher education, public safety, economic development and the environment. It also has $70 million for local road and bridge projects.
“Local roads and bridges are critical components of our overall transportation infrastructure, especially in fast growing counties like Dakota and Goodhue,” Garofalo said.
The House bonding bill also “splits the difference” on spending for higher education institutions. While the Governor proposed about $100 million and the Senate $243 million, the House comes in at $154 million.
