GAROFALO: $2 BILLION BUDGET SURPLUS IS PROOF THAT STATE HAS BEEN IN GOOD HANDS
ST. PAUL - The $2.17 billion budget surplus projected today by state finance officials is proof that Minnesota has been moving in the right fiscal direction, said state representative Pat Garofalo (R-Farmington).
“It wasn’t long ago that state legislators were trying to figure out to come back from years of budget deficits,” Garofalo said. “Now that we are sitting on a projected surplus in the billions of dollars it’s obvious how standing firm on solid, fiscally responsible principles reaps its own rewards.”
While Garofalo is encouraged by the news of the forecast, he said he is also equally concerned. “The surplus belongs to the taxpayers of Minnesota. It is not a windfall for state government officials to spend at will. If we are not careful, the celebration could be short-lived. We need to continue to be fiscally responsible as we go into the 2007 legislative session.”
The next legislative session begins January 3, 2007. Final budgetary forecast numbers will be released in February 2007.
Rep. Garofalo’s legislative address is 429 State Office Building, 100 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., St. Paul, MN 55155. His phone number is 651-296-1069 or toll-free at 888-667-3337. His e-mail address is rep.pat.garofalo@house.mn.
