HOUSE BONDING PACKAGE INCLUDES $850,000 FOR FARMINGTON HIGH SCHOOL
State Representative and House Capital Investment committee member Pat Garofalo (R-Farmington) today announced that $850,000 in infrastructure spending has been appropriated in the 2006 Minnesota House of Representatives bonding package for construction of a water main for the new Farmington High School.
Although a previous bond referendum made a new high school possible, disagreements regarding the location lead to the Farmington school district filing a lawsuit against the city. Garofalo said he hopes the new funding will be able to unite the community.
“This appropriation is supported by both the city council and the school board. It's inclusion in the bonding bill provides another tool to end the litigation that is dividing our community,” Garofalo said. “It also presents the opportunity to bridge the gap between the city council and the school district. A lot of work remains, but I am cautiously optimistic that we can make this happen.”
Under the bill, the funding is appropriated through a grant to the city of Farmington. However, the grant is contingent upon the city of Farmington and the Farmington school district reaching a general agreement on the new high school by July 15, 2006. Moreover, each dollar of state money appropriated is available as the commissioner of finance determines that at least $2 of non-state money is committed to the project.
The Minnesota House of Representatives passed the 2006 bonding package on April 12 by a vote of 114-16. The next step will be working out differences between the House and Senate versions of the bill in conference committee. The committee is expected to convene after Easter.
