It has been an exciting week in the House of Representatives as I watched three bills I sponsored move forward. The House Capital Investment Committee released the bonding bill on Wednesday and I was elated to see that my projects for our area were included in the bill. The Faribault prison was given full funding in the amount of almost $85 million and the South Central Technical College Applied Lab received almost $5 million. In addition, we received $4.2 for the Minnesota State Academies Asset Preservation, bringing the total of project funding to our area to over $90 million.
Many in our district shared the excitement I felt at this news. These projects will not only improve these three facilities, they will also bring much needed construction jobs into our communities at a time when the creation of new jobs is lagging. The failure of the legislature to pass a bonding bill last session has compounded this problem and these projects will do a lot to jump-start our local economy.
I was pleased that the House Ways and Means Committee also approved our projects last Wednesday.
There are two more rounds facing this legislation. On Tuesday night of this week the entire House will vote on the bill. After that, the Conference Committee will work to resolve any differences between the final House bill and the Senate bill. Again, I will be anxiously watching, always optimistic that we will make the cut.
It is my intent not to give up but to keep on fighting to deliver these projects for our district. It is time for our state legislators to do the right thing for the people of Minnesota, and I will do my best, always, to keep this effort moving forward.
