ST. PAUL, MN – This week at the Capitol, Representative Patti Fritz (DFL-Faribault) appeared in front of the Public Safety Policy and Finance Committee in support of her bill (HF107) that would provide for state bonding for the first phase of the Faribault prison expansion and improvements.
"The facilities at the prison are aging and are increasingly unsafe for prison employees," said Fritz. "The additional state funds will create a safer work environment and the prison expansion will help to create more good paying jobs for our community."
Rep. Fritz pointed to the strong bi-partisan support for this bill. Senator Neuville is carrying the companion to the bill in the Senate.
"Providing for the health and safety of our workers shouldn't be a partisan issue," said Fritz.
Minnesota Department of Corrections Commissioner Joan Fabian and Deputy Commissioner Dennis Benson were also in attendance to testify in support of Fritz's prison legislation.
Funding for asset preservation for the Faribault prison was included in the 2004 Capital Investment bill, which perished due to legislative deadlock.
Rep. Fritz said that she is optimistic that the project will be approved. The project passed its first hurdle today; it received a positive recommendation from the Public Safety Policy and Finance Committee to be included in the House Capital Investment bill.
The Senate approved the project as part of their Capital Investment bill passed last month.
