PASSAGE OF REMAINING BILLS ENDS SPECIAL SESSION

St. Paul, MN – After a lengthy debate, the four remaining bills of the 2005 legislative session were passed on Wednesday night, putting an end to the Special Session.
Many provisions in all of the bills are good for Minnesota, according to Representative Patti Fritz (DFL-Faribault). "I'm very pleased with many of the things we got done tonight," said Fritz. "Most importantly, we were able to adequately fund education and prevent cuts to MinnesotaCare."
Under the Education Finance Bill, schools in Minnesota will receive $800 million over the next two years, an increase of $182 per student in '06 and $191 in '07. This is the first funding increase that schools have received since 2003, and their funding was actually cut for the first time ever last year.
The passage of the Health and Human Services Bill will prevent nearly 40,000 from losing their health coverage under MinnesotaCare. The $5,000 benefit cap was also eliminated, which will allow those people with serious illnesses and injuries to get the medical care they need.
Other significant legislation that was passed included $46 million in funding for Local Government Aid (LGA), changes to the Old Age Lien Law that will offer protection for some estates and some funding for transit and transportation.
"I believe that overall we got some excellent bills passed that will be good for Minnesota," said Fritz. "We worked together and we compromised, and because of that, we all come out ahead."
