Rep. Fritz: Let’s Vote on a Bonding Bill that Benefits All

St. Paul, MN – Today, the House failed to pass HF 2754, a bonding bill that would solely fund restoration and repair of Minnesota’s State Capitol. Needing 81 votes to pass, the bill failed on a bi-partisan vote, 80-50.

HF 2754 would authorize $221 million to be used for restoring the Capitol, however, only approximately $70 million could be used immediately. This bill is half of the House Majority’s bonding proposal. The House Majority has also introduced a $280 million bonding bill that would authorize funding of a relatively small number of regional projects.

State Representative Patti Fritz has been a vocal proponent for a comprehensive bonding bill that includes funding for South Central College in Faribault. Rep. Fritz offered the following comments:

“I’m disappointed that with just a few remaining days of session, we are not focusing our efforts on a strategic, comprehensive bonding bill that would not only put Minnesotans back to work, but would also improve local economies across the state.

“I don’t disagree that restoring the Capitol should be part of a robust bonding bill, but I think it is unwise to authorize such a large sum of money for a project that can only use a third of it now. The $150 million unused dollars allotted for restoring the Capitol could easily go towards funding capable of breaking ground now. Projects like the expansion of South Central College

“Investing in regional projects, is an investment in our local economies. Let’s focus on a real bonding project that benefits all of Minnesota."
