(ST. PAUL) – State Representative Patti Fritz announced today she is co-authoring legislation to reinstate the Market Value Homestead Credit. The homestead credit was repealed by the Minnesota Legislature earlier this year when Republicans voted numerous times to eliminate the tax credit which is used by 95 percent of Minnesota homeowners. Rep. Fritz voted against eliminating the tax credit.
“When Republicans voted to raise taxes on 95 percent of homeowners, I was astonished," explained Fritz. “Most homeowners rely on this tax credit which reduced property taxes by as much as $304 a year for homeowners.”
The Market Value Homestead Credit provided $538 million per biennium in property tax relief. It applies to homeowners with a house valued up to $414,000. “This tax credit helps homeowners, farmers and businesses in our area,” noted Fritz. “Minnesota farmers will see a $37 million increase in agriculture property taxes due to the elimination of the tax credit. Plus, homeowners in rural Minnesota will see 3 times the property tax increases compared to those in parts of the metro area. For businesses in rural areas the differential is 6 times higher.”
Fritz pledged to continue to fight for tax relief for homeowners and renters. “This Republican tax increase could not be swept under the rug. I can’t believe they thought they could get away with this.”
