St. Paul- Representative Patti Fritz (DFL-Faribault) asked for fairness for health care workers today at a press conference that was held on the steps of the State Capitol. Members of the DFL party called the press conference to respond to the Governor's plan for a government shut-down, and the looming deadline that is facing the legislature.
"Minnesotans understand what's at stake in the special session," said House DFL leader Matt Entenza. "What we're debating right now comes down to two essential questions: Are we going to adequately fund our schools and health care in Minnesota, and if so, how are we going to pay for it?"
Fritz, who has worked in health care for over 40 years, called for continued negotiations in order to reach a plan that will provide fairness in pay for health care workers.
"We have several nursing homes in our area," said Fritz. "I have heard from most of them regarding the seriousness of the budget cuts that are being proposed by the Governor.
These are the people who care for our parents and grandparents, they deserve a cost of living increase."
"We've reached a consensus that some additional revenue is going to be needed to adequately fund our schools and health care," added Entenza. "The remaining question is where that money is going to come from."
Fritz also said that she supports a basic continuing budget if a government shutdown were eminent.
"Our first goal is to pass a comprehensive state budget that provides for excellent schools and access to health
care. I believe that this is do-able, and I feel that we are making progress toward that end.
If we reach the end of the month without reaching that goal, however, I will support a bill that allows for state government to continue to function until a final agreement can be hammered out," said Fritz.
"That's a much better alternative than shutting down state government."
