Dear Editor,
I've heard a lot of questions lately about the special session, mainly, why has it happened again. To put it simply, we are at this point because of a significant difference in opinion on how to fund fundamental areas such as education, health care, jobs and transportation. The Governor and the House leadership have plans on the table that will result in 30,000 people losing their MinnesotaCare health coverage. There are also serious concerns that their funding plan for education will result in more teacher lay-offs, larger class sizes and more increases in property taxes. And, I believe that most Minnesotans recognize the need to address our transportation issues. Our roads and highways are becoming increasingly more congested and in need of repair.
Clearly, compromise is key. We have had some real success this session when we worked together, passing a major bonding bill, increasing the minimum wage and toughening the laws regarding methamphetamine production and use and sexual predators. When we work together in a bipartisan way, we get things done, and this needs to continue in the special session more than ever.
The real work now is being done behind closed doors, between the Governor and House and Senate leaders. And, while there is pressure to end the special session quickly, I am hopeful that this pressure does not lead to a hasty decision that will further compromise public education and health care in our state. Instead, I am hopeful that a good solution is close and that we will move forward with strong bills for our core Minnesota values of quality education for all, available health care and a robust job market for everyone who wants to work
