Honoring loved ones who serve our country

Dear Editor,
As we celebrate the Memorial Day weekend, we are reminded of the sacrifices the men and women in the Armed Forces have made for all of us. As the daughter of a WWII veteran, this holiday reminds me of my Dad; how proud and willing he was to serve his country.
This year, we will be especially honoring the men and women who are risking their lives in Iraq. Just this week we learned of the death of Minnesota State Senator Becky Lourey's son, who was serving his second term in Iraq. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family, and to all of the soldiers and their friends and families. They are sacrificing a great deal on our behalf.
I was very pleased that this year the State Legislature passed a bill authorizing the building of a WWII Memorial on the Capitol Mall. The memorial will serve as a reminder of the sacrifices our parents and grandparents made for our sake, one that we can too easily forget as time passes. They fought to protect our way of life, our great system of democracy that we uphold and cherish.
So, as you lay flowers on the gravesites of loved ones, attend a Memorial Day parade or program, or just relax with family and friends, take time to reflect on the great history of our country and the important role our veterans have played in protecting our way of life. This weekend, especially, it's important to remember how fortunate we are.
