Dear Editor,
Memorial Day is so much more than just a day off from work. It also gives us the opportunity to pause, remember and thank the men and women who have served our country. Especially at times of war, we honor their dedication and sacrifice, as well as the sacrifices made every day by their family members and friends who are trying to get by while they are gone.
We made some gains this year at the State Legislature on behalf of veterans. We designated funding for improvements to veterans homes, set aside money for new memorials, and initiated plans for three new state veterans’ cemeteries.
We also put provisions in place to help military families, including expanding education benefits and giving schools permission to waive activity fees for children of deployed service members.
I hope you’ll join me in celebrating Memorial Day this Monday. Please join me at the start of Memorial Day activities at the Rice County Courthouse at 8:30 a.m. Following that, I'll see you at the parade and the program immediately afterward.
Finally, let me just say thank you to every service man and woman for your service to our great nation. Whatever your plans, please take time to reflect on the important role veterans and now the members of the Armed Forces play in protecting our way of life.
Sincerely,
State Representative Patti Fritz
