FRITZ BILL MAKES ORAL CHEMOTHERAPY MORE AFFORDABLE

St. Paul, MN – Legislation authored by State Rep. Patti Fritz that will help cancer patients afford the most effective method to treat their illness passed on the House floor Wednesday night.
According to Rep. Fritz, even though the use of oral chemotherapy is becoming a more commonly used course of treatment, it is unattainable for many patients because of the high cost.
“Because insurance companies do not cover oral chemotherapy in the same manner as they do intravenous or injected chemotherapy, the out of pocket costs are often too high for people to afford" said Fritz. “If this legislation is enacted, insurance companies will be prohibited from charging more for oral chemotherapy than any other kind of treatment.”
Fritz said oral chemotherapy has many benefits, including being less invasive and more convenient – especially for patients in rural Minnesota who are far away from their clinic or hospital. The legislation has the support of the American Cancer Society.
“This bill will make sure cancer patients can afford the medicine most likely to save their life with the fewest side effects,” said Fritz. “It’s time health insurance evolves to ensure delivery of effective, necessary medicine in a manner that is affordable to patients.”
