St. Paul, MN - The Minnesota House passed its Capital Investment bill Monday night with bipartisan support, putting in place an investment strategy that will create or sustain up to 20,000 jobs, fund important statewide projects for higher education, transportation and transit improvements and clean water infrastructure.
Several local projects proposed by State Rep. Patti Fritz are included in the bill, the largest being $13.4 million for classroom renovation at South Central College. Other projects include $500 thousand for Independent Living Housing at the Academy for the Blind campus, which will be done in collaboration with South Central College, and another $2 million for the Academy for asset preservation.
$125 thousand was designated for Fritz’s “Remember with Dignity" program, which puts grave markers on the unmarked graves of deceased residents of state hospitals and regional treatment centers, and the Mill Towns Trail will share in designated trail funding.
“Economists advise us that recessions are a good time to invest in infrastructure since material and labor costs are lower, and bids for building projects are coming in at 10-15% below estimates,” said Fritz. “We also still have nearly 250,000 Minnesotans unemployed. For our economy, to enhance and protect our local assets, and to put people to work - now is the time to make these investments in our state.”
The Senate passed their bonding bill last week; both bills now move to Conference Committee.
