State Representative Patti Fritz (DFL-Faribault) praised the passing today of the Ethanol Conference Committee report, moving legislation forward that will boost rural Minnesota's economy by doubling the level of ethanol in vehicle gasoline sold in Minnesota.
"I'm very pleased that our state is moving this direction, " said Fritz. "It is important that we continue to look for ways to stimulate our rural economy, as well as reduce our dependency on foreign oil."
Under the bill, the minimum content requirement for ethanol in fuels sold in Minnesota will be increased from 10% to 20% by January 1, 2012. The bill also sets a goal of replacing 20% of all liquid fuel with renewable fuels by 2015.
"None of us like to pay the high prices we are seeing at the pump lately," said Fritz. "Our only defense is to find alternative sources of energy, and developing a source in Minnesota makes this even better."
"This increase in demand for ethanol will add value to Minnesota corn," added Fritz. "This will create jobs in rural areas of the state and pump money back into our economy."
Fritz said the ethanol industry now generates an estimated $1.36 billion to the economy and is responsible for 5,300 jobs. This measure will increase the impact to the economy $1.58 billion and create and additional 1,200 jobs.
The bill passed by a vote of 100-32 and now moves to the Governor.
