St. Paul, MN - The 2009 Capital Investment Bill introduced this week is being characterized as a basic bonding bill, designed to create new jobs quickly and make effective use of federal dollars.
The proposal includes $200 million worth of “paintbrush and shovel ready" projects, focused heavily on protecting health and safety, improving transportation and other infrastructure, and preserving state assets. The spending is also strategically planned to leverage federal stimulus and federal matching dollars to the greatest extent possible.
A project for the South Central College in Faribault is on the list, with $500 thousand identified for elevator code replacement, ADA code compliance and restrooms.
“Even during tough economic times, it makes good sense to take care of state-owned assets such as the South Central College campus,” said Fritz. “It will also provide a good boost to our economy by creating badly-needed local jobs.”
Highlights of the House proposal include:
? $ 12.7 million for flood mitigation
? $ 20 million the University of Minnesota
? $ 30 million for Minnesota State Colleges and Universities
? $ 11 million for local bridge replacement
? $ 2.1 million for veteran’s homes
? $ 20 million to improve security at the state’s sex offender facility at Moose Lake
"Since I came to office in 2005, the bonding bill has been very good for our area," said Fritz. "I look forward to even more local projects next year when we do our more complete bonding bill.”
