If you feel as though you have been hit with larger than usual property tax increases in the past two years, I would like to encourage you to apply for the property tax assistance program. This program may allow you to take an income tax credit to offset your high property taxes and can give substantial tax relief to many people.
You may be eligible for a property tax refund based on your household income and the property taxes paid on your principal place of residence. To qualify:
-as a renter, your total household income for 2004 must be less than $45,970.
-as a homeowner, you may be eligible for one or both of the following refunds, if you owned and lived in your home on January 2, 2005. To qualify for the:
-regular property tax refund, your total household income for 2004 must be less than $85,210.
-special property tax refund, you must have owned and lived in your home both on January 2, 2004, and on January 2, 2005; your net property tax on your homestead must have increased by more than 12% from 2004 to 2005; and the increase must be at least $100. There is no income limit for the special property tax refund.
To apply, homeowners need to fill out an M-1PR form. That form is available from area libraries and wherever tax forms are distributed or from the Minnesota Department of Revenue at 651-296-4444 or on their website at www.taxes.state.mn.us. The application is due on August 15th, and refunds are sent out in October. If you missed applying in previous years, you can go back two years and file.
This is a tax refund that many people may miss and I want to be sure and encourage everyone who is eligible to take advantage of it.
