St. Paul, MN The Minnesota House of Representatives adjourned in the early morning hours of Monday, May 19th, finishing their work on time for the second year in a row. State Rep. Patti Fritz said good progress was made on the top priorities House Democrats set at the beginning of this biennium improved funding for schools, health care reform that lowers the cost for all Minnesotans and expands coverage, more money for nursing homes and property tax relief for those who need it the most.
"Two years ago, we set our "Stick to the Basics" agenda, pledging to protect the traditional values that have made our state great," said Fritz. "We laid a solid foundation on those goals last year, and made good progress again this year despite our projected budget deficit."
Public schools in Minnesota will receive an additional 1 percent funding increase next year, adding $51 dollars for every student. In addition, schools are being offered the flexibility to make a one-time transfer of an additional $51 from their capital budget to their general fund to address critical needs.
Fritz, who served as Vice-Chair of the Health and Human Services Policy Committee, said the final health care bill will reduce the number of uninsured Minnesotans by 31 percent over this biennium, and begin to lower health care costs for every Minnesotan. In addition, nursing homes are slated to receive a 2 percent cost of living adjustment in 2009, on top of the 2 percent they received in 2008.
Property owners will have their taxes capped at 3.9 percent over the next three years, and property tax relief will provide $60 million in new funding to local governments and $25 million directly to homeowners.
"This deal represents a reasonable and balanced combination of budget cuts and use of budget reserves," said Fritz. "When you add in the $6.6 billion ten-year transportation package, and our bonding bill that funds work projects across the state including several in our area, this could easily be considered one of the most productive sessions in many years."
