HOUSE PASSES EDUCATION FUNDING BILL

St. Paul, MN – The Minnesota House of Representatives moved forward on an education funding bill on Tuesday night that will provide a funding boost to every school in the state in 2009.
State Representative Patti Fritz supported the legislation, stating the extra money will make a real difference to schools as they face growing transportation, heating and food costs.
"Our intent from the beginning of session has been to try and find a way to offer our schools more money for the coming year," said Fritz. "We had hoped to reach agreement with the Governor on a funding bill, but time is running out."
The bill provides an additional $51 per pupil for every school. It also offers schools the flexibility to transfer an additional $51 per pupil from their capital budget to their general fund to address critical needs. It now moves to the Senate, where it is expected to be passed and moved to the Governor.
The bill makes use of unused Q-Comp funds, state budget reserves and budget cuts at the Department of Education to provide the funding boost for 2009. Schools currently receiving Q-Comp funds will continue to receive those funds, and it is expected the funds will be returned to Q-Comp in the future.
"One thing I've learned after my years as a nurse and a parent is to be prepared," said Fritz. "With the passage of this bill, we are prepared to do the right thing for our students even if we don't reach agreement with the Governor."
