FRITZ LEGISLATION AIMS TO REDUCE INFANT DEATHS

St. Paul, MN – A Minnesota mother recently learned the tragic consequences of placing a newborn in the wrong position to sleep. Colleen Lindstrom of Minneapolis left her infant daughter at her daycare center, only to return later to discover she had died of Sudden Infant Death syndrome (SIDS) as the result of being placed on her stomach.
To help prevent another tragedy such as this, State Rep. Patti Fritz introduced legislation recently that would require licensed daycare programs to place infants on their backs to sleep, unless the provider has written documentation from the infant's doctor directing an alternative sleeping position.
The bill also stipulates that the crib be equipped with a firm mattress, and no pillows, quilts, comforters, stuffed toys or other soft products are in the bed with the infant.
"To lose a precious baby simply because she was sleeping on her stomach is a tragedy that could have been prevented," said Fritz. "If passed, this bill will serve as a powerful reminder to daycare providers of how important this is."
According to Fritz, babies who sleep on their stomachs are much more likely to die of SIDS than are babies who sleep on their back – especially if they are suddenly switched to stomach sleeping.
