RICE COUNTY RECEIVES GRANTS FOR VETERAN OUTREACH


St. Paul, MN – State Rep. Patti Fritz State Representative is pleased to announce that the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs has awarded a $15,000 grant to Rice County to help with outreach efforts for veterans.
The "Grants to Counties" program was created by the 2006 Minnesota State Legislature; all 87 counties are eligible to apply for the grants, which enhance the benefits, programs and services provided to veterans.
"I want to congratulate the Rice County Veterans Affairs Service Office for their successful application for this grant money," said Rep. Fritz. "There are few things more important than helping our young men and women returning from active duty adjust back to civilian life."
A total of $950 thousand in grants have been awarded to 72 counties. The Rice County Veterans Service Office will use this grant money to meet their mission of improving the quality of life for veterans and their families.
Last year, the State Legislature passed several bills to help veterans, including increasing the funding for the Department of Veteran's Affairs and county services, as well as approving $1 thousand a semester for tuition so veterans can continue their education. The same bill also extends education benefits to the spouses of military members who were killed in action.
Rep. Fritz's legislation calling for a crisis hotline for veterans was also passed, The line is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and the number is 1-888-LINKVET.
