CITIZEN'S COMMENT LINE, WEBSITE ON PROPERTY TAX UNVEILED

ST. PAUL – State Representative Patti Fritz (DFL-Faribault) is announcing the creation of a toll-free comment line and website designed to give taxpayers a say in how the House of Representatives addresses rapidly rising property taxes.
"Over the past few years, property taxes in Minnesota have risen sharply," said Fritz. "This issue is a top priority for us this session, and we're asking the average Minnesotan for help."
Minnesota residents can offer their input in two ways. Outstate residents can call Minnesota's Property Tax Comment line at 1-800-551-5520, while metro area residents can call 651-297-8391. Minnesotans can also log onto Minnesota's Property Tax Comment webpage at www.house.mn/dfl/ptax/propertytaxproject.html.
In addition, one "Idea of the Day" will be highlighted and shared with the Property Tax Relief and Local Sales Tax Committee on a weekly basis. There will also be a Citizen's Property Tax Relief Bill created that will be based on the best suggestions received.
"We're serious about addressing this issue in a comprehensive way that will best address the needs of property owners," said Fritz.
According to Fritz, property taxes in Minnesota increased close to $1.5 billion over the past four years, for a variety of reasons - cuts in state education funding, cuts in aid to cities and counties and changes in the property tax laws.
"We know there isn't a one-size fits all solution to bring down property taxes," said Fritz. "We hope that by hearing from you on how rising property taxes have impacted your lives, we can best identify any trouble areas that need to be addressed and work toward the best solutions."
