St. Paul, MN - State Representative Patti Fritz (DFL - Faribault) was successful in adding an amendment for a local option sales tax for the town of Medford last week. Unfortunately, shortly after the amendment was added, the tax bill was defeated on a bipartisan vote.
The amendment would have given the voters in Medford the chance to decide whether or not they want to pay a local option sales tax for the city's treatment plant. This option is approved for very few cities each year; those that are approved have the option of including the local option sales tax on the ballot in November.
"Even though in the end this bill was defeated, I'm pleased that the Tax Committee saw the merit of my proposal," said Fritz. "Small towns are struggling to pay for basic improvements, especially in light of the recent cuts to Local Government Aid (LGA).
A local option sales tax is one funding option that would allow the city of Medford to make the critical improvements it needs and I intend to propose it again next session."
Fritz said that her amendment was one good component of an otherwise irresponsible bill. According to Fritz, the tax cuts spent all of the projected budget surplus well into the future, resulting in cuts to education and nursing homes, as well as leading to more increases in property taxes. In addition, the funding for LGA would come at the expense of transportation funding.
"Really, this bill was just about borrowing from Peter to pay Paul," said Fritz. "No one wins when we pit education, nursing homes and transportation against tax cuts and LGA."
