ST. PAUL, MN – Rep. Patti Fritz has thrown her support behind a bill that would prohibit the school year from starting before Labor Day.
The bipartisan bill would change the current earliest date public schools can begin from September 1 to after the Labor Day weekend. Days devoted to teacher workshops would be permitted before Labor Day.
"I think this is a great idea," said Fritz. "I was visited last week by a group of students who are in FAA and they are very troubled by the early school starts because of how it limits their ability to participate in the State Fair."
4-H and FFA youth programs were especially harmed, with the dorms at the 4-H building actually closed for three days during the fair.
"These kids work hard all year long to get ready for this one time of year when they can really shine," said Fritz. "I think we should return to the tradition of ending the summer at the Great Minnesota Get-Together and then start the school year."
