NEWS RELEASE

REPRESENTATIVE DEAN TOURS PRISON FACILITY

STILLWATER – State Representative Matt Dean, R-Dellwood, Wednesday toured the Stillwater state prison to assess its need for further upgrades.

Rep. Dean was part of a delegation representing the House Capital Investment Committee, which will consider including a request for a $20 million, 150-bed segregation unit in the Committee’s 2005 bonding proposal.

“The prison needs this new unit,” Rep. Dean said. “Having 150 more beds will not only lower per diem costs, but it will allow for better management of the prisoners,” he added. The new construction would allow the prison to take on 150 more offenders, but it would not require additional staffing.

Governor Pawlenty included the project in his 2005 bonding proposal and it was part of the bonding bill approved by the Minnesota House in 2004. The 2004 bonding bill failed when the Senate failed to pass its version of the bill, but House and Senate leaders agree some form of the 2004 bill will pass the legislature in 2005.

Alleviating prison crowding will be an issue facing legislators in 2005. The Capital Investment Committee also plans to visit other state corrections facilities before it submits its final bonding bill to the entire House.
