NEWS RELEASE

HOUSE REPUBLICANS HOLD THE LINE ON NEW TAXES

ST. PAUL – The Minnesota House on Tuesday defeated an amendment that would have raised state taxes by hundreds of millions of dollars.

“We’re sending the strong message that as a state we should fund our priorities within our means,” said State Representative Matt Dean, R-Dellwood, who joined a bipartisan group of 72 legislators who voted against the tax increase.

The amendment came during the House floor debate of a House resolution setting the maximum amount of state government spending for the 2006-07 biennium. Before finance committees can set their individual budget targets, the full House must set the maximum total amount of government spending for the biennium. The House agreed to $2 billion in new spending and set the maximum spending allowed to $29.84 billion in the next two years.

“We will continue to make sound and responsible financial decisions,” Dean said. “By being good stewards of taxpayer dollars, we will also make good on our promise to add additional dollars to our schools.”

“Minnesota families will feel the impact in their own budgets if the state fails to be accountable for how it spends their money,” Dean added.
