PRESS RELEASE

BERGLIN PROPOSES DEEP CUTS TO HOSPITALS, NURSING HOMES “Doomsday” scenarios are neither helpful nor accurate

ST PAUL – State Representative Matt Dean [R-Dellwood] today criticized Democrats for introducing a health and human services spending plan that they claim is necessary without huge, job killing tax increases. Senator Berglin’s proposal – which would cut more than $207 million from nursing homes and more than $194 million from hospitals during the next biennium – represents a cynical political ploy at best, and legislative fear-mongering at worst.

“Senator Berglin’s false-choice scheme assumes that nursing homes and payments to hospitals are the only two budget areas that can possibly be cut,” said Rep. Dean.

“The Democrats fail to realize that the problem continues to be unsustainable growth in our public assistance programs. We have called for a reduction in spending along with meaningful reform, but for the past three years we have seen the opposite. We have continued to expand spending between 10 and 20 percent per biennium. Rather than move Minnesotans from welfare to work, we are moving them from work to welfare.

“The Democrats understand that we can get this session done right now without raising taxes.
This is a desperate last-minute attempt to force tax increases on Minnesota families and businesses who agree with Governor Pawlenty that in times of economic challenge the worst thing you can do is to raise taxes.”
