ST. PAUL - - State Representatives Jeff Johnson (R-Plymouth) and Matt Dean (R-Stillwater) will host a civic round table on the issue of methamphetamines, crime, and health costs at the Stillwater City Hall at 9 a.m. on Friday, March 11.
Invited participants in the round table include representatives of Washington County Sheriff James Frank, Washington County Attorney Doug Johnson, and the Washington County courts, commissioners and the public health department.
“Meth has become a plague in Greater Minnesota,” said Johnson, who is the chief author of House File 572, a bill that will restrict sales of over-the-counter drugs used to make meth, increase penalties for the manufacture or sale of the hallucinogen, and create a revolving fund to help local governments in cleaning up the poisoned sites of meth labs.
“Our prison populations are swelling, families are being torn apart, and communities are being taxed for the human costs of these drugs,” Johnson said.
Rep. Dean noted that many of the illegal labs are set up on farms or rural lots in Washington County.
“One of the three main ingredients in this killer drug is anhydrous ammonia, the liquid fertilizer you see in the white plastic trailers,” he said. “Another reason why rural areas are used by the pushers is that a remote site can be helpful in disguising the strong chemical smell associated with a lab.”
The Johnson legislation faces heavy questioning by some drug manufacturers, pharmacy chains, convenience stores, and other retailers. Rep. Johnson is seeking input from law enforcement, health providers, and county commissioners on the impact of meth on Greater Minnesota.
The 45-minute round table will be followed by a media availability and input from the public.
