LETTER TO THE EDITOR

AN ENTIRE WEEK TO HONOR VETERANS

To the editor:

Veterans Day gives Americans the opportunity to celebrate the bravery and sacrifice of all U.S. veterans, but what many people don’t know is there is an entire week dedicated to honoring service members.

The week of Nov. 11-17 is “National Veterans Awareness Week,” as declared by a United States Senate resolution which passed in 2001. The resolution calls for educational efforts directed at elementary and secondary school students concerning the contributions and sacrifices of veterans.

Considering how selflessly Americans have sacrificed in war, it’s fitting that veterans have a full week to be celebrated. The least we can do is take time to offer thanks to anyone we know who has served in the armed forces. A genuine hand shake and some appreciative words mean an awful lot to those who have fought for liberty.

Also maybe under the radar are some of the many programs and services available to veterans by the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs and other agencies. Here are a few:

LinkVet
LinkVet, the Veterans Linkage Line for Minnesota veterans, makes it easier for veterans and their families to find services and ensure immediate crisis intervention. During business hours, trained staff from the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs will provide information on veterans’ benefits, healthcare, education, and reintegration. The line will roll to Crisis Connection counselors for 24-hour, seven days a week coverage (including holidays) for immediate crisis intervention and psychological counseling. For more information on LinkVet: http://www.mdva.state.mn.us/LinkVet.htm

Minnesota GI Bill
The Minnesota GI Bill program provides postsecondary educational assistance to eligible Minnesota veterans, and to the children and spouses of deceased or severely disabled Minnesota Veterans. For eligibility requirements and financial assistance information: http://www.minnesotaveteran.org/education/MNGIBill.htm

E-mail Newsletters
The Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs now offers e-mail lists to keep you informed of veteran issues in Minnesota. To sign up for the newsletters: http://www.mdva.state.mn.us/newsletter.htm
