NEWS RELEASE

Dean works for Browns Creek Trail Purchase

As a result of a last minute change to the state construction bonding bill, $250,000 will go to the DNR for appropriation to begin acquisition of the Zephyr Train property. The bill passed out of the Capital Investment Committee and now heads for the Finance Committee.

Rep. Matt Dean (R-Dellwood) reopened the bonding bill with an amendment to include funding for a portion of the cost to purchase the Zephyr Train property. "We should not wait another year to acquire this property because this opportunity may pass us by." Dean said. The bonding bill then passed the committee with the finances to begin acquisition.

The final purchase price will be determined this year through negotiations and the majority of the costs would be included in next year's bonding bill. Dean will also seek county support for the project, as well as other stakeholders.

The trail will follow the rout of the existing Zephyr rail line. The five mile connection will join the Gateway Trail near Highway 96 and downtown Stillwater. Bikers and riders will follow Brown's Creek from the bluffs to the river along the creek, which will likely be the namesake of the trail.

"I am very happy to have a position in this year's bill," Dean said. "It will be an important step forward in protecting this onetime opportunity for Stillwater and the state. This is a golden opportunity to acquire a statewide asset in Browns Creek and allow the community and the state to share in this treasure while showcasing our downtown to visitors from all over the region."

Dean credited chair Alice Hausman (DFL-Saint Paul) for recognizing the urgency and the need to move this year.
