PRESS RELEASE

SENATOR VANDEVEER AND REPRESENTATIVE DEAN REOPEN BOOMSITE

After months of negotiating with state agencies, stakeholder meetings and discussions with constituents, State Representative Matt Dean and State Senator Ray Vandeveer have succeeded reopening the Stillwater Boomsite.

"The community has been very clear on the importance of this site," said Dean. "The Department of Natural Resources Assistant Commissioner Laurie Martinson and Commissioner Mark Holsten should be commended for stepping up to take a leadership role in returning the site to the community and to charting the future of the site."

Under an agreement with the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT), the agency will reopen the facility April 15, 2007. MnDOT will continue to operate the Boomsite seasonally as it has in the past until April 15, 2008. The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will take control of the facility thereafter.

The DNR will seek partners to maintain and operate the facility long-term. Some of the prospective partners include: National Park Service, Washington County, Stillwater Township, and the City of Stillwater. The partnership goal will be to develop a long-term vision for the facility, and its relationship to other historic, scenic, and recreational assets.

There are some changes being considered for the level of service that will be provided at the facility in order to keep the long-term operation costs reasonable. Some of these changes could include replacing the existing restroom buildings. The new buildings would feature flush toilets, with a new vault toilet building. The details of the changes have not been finalized, and will be presented during the 2008 Legislative Session.

"The people of the St. Croix Valley and surrounding areas have waited a long time for this result," said Senator Vandeveer. "This site has been an important commercial, scenic, recreational and historical asset in our community since its earliest days. With the reopening thousands of people will be able to take advantage of the natural beauty of this scenic treasure."

Representative Dean and Senator Vandeveer concluded with a special thanks to Lt. Governor Molnau who has been extremely helpful in finding a long term solution for the site.
