NEWS RELEASE

DEAN RESPONDS TO GOVERNOR’S BUDGET PROPOSAL Citing $2.2 Billion Surplus, Dean Supports More Tax Relief

St. Paul – On Monday Governor Pawlenty unveiled his proposed budget for the next biennium. This budget must be approved by the legislature, and will be the subject of much debate in the months ahead.

The Governor’s budget focuses on pay for performance and targets four investments: better government, better energy, better education, and better health care. The proposed budget would increase General Fund spending by $2.9 Billion, or 9.3% using new funds from state revenue growth. Included in the budget proposal is $281 million for tax relief, $150 million of which is targeted to property tax relief.

Rep. Matt Dean wants to take the Governor’s proposed tax relief a step further. “We are fortunate to have a state surplus of nearly $2.2 Billion,” Dean said. “This extra revenue was generated by hard-working Minnesotans, and I believe we should return at least $1 Billion to the taxpayers who earned it.”

“Families should keep more of their hard-earned dollars. They can decide best how to spend this money, not our state government.”
