NEWS RELEASE

DEAN SAYS 2006 LEGISLATIVE SESSION A SUCCESS Session ends one day early

SAINT PAUL – Yesterday the Minnesota legislature concluded its official business for 2006. Representative Matt Dean called the session a success, noting several key accomplishments including finishing a day early.

Minnesota has seen an economic turnaround that has captured the attention of the country. We have gone from a $4.5 billion deficit to a $1 billion surplus. “2006 was a bonding year, not a budget year,” Dean explained. “I enjoyed my work on the bonding committee, and learned a great deal traveling the state of Minnesota to evaluate bonding proposals. Minnesota will benefit from several important projects in our district included in the state bonding bill.”

In the approved bill, Century College will receive $19.9 million for a new library, the Stillwater prison will receive &19.58 million for a new segregation unit, and the Gateway trail will receive $750,000 for improvements.

“The projects in the 2006 bonding bill have significant statewide interest. They are important for Minnesota’s infrastructure, and they generate important construction jobs in our state,” Dean said.

Dean noted that one of the session’s most important accomplishments was holding the line on new taxes. “We are fortunate that our fiscal responsibility provided a state surplus this year,” Dean said. “That money will be spent on emergency provisions, such as keeping sex offenders locked up. The remainder of the surplus dollars will go back to taxpayers by eliminating the marriage penalty tax and reducing the alternative minimum tax, both of which will significantly help Minnesota families.”

Representative Matt Dean (Dellwood) serves on four House committees: Capital Investment, Civil Law and Elections, Education Policy and Reform, and Health Policy and Finance. This is his first term in the Minnesota legislature. Representative Dean can be contacted by phone (651.296.3018) or email (rep.matt.dean@house.mn).
