Greetings from the Capitol!
We are nearing the end of the legislative session, and are continuing to make progress on key legislation. Here are a few items of interest:
CONFERENCE COMMITTEES AT WORK
When a proposal receives approval from each legislative body, House and Senate, members from each are appointed to a conference committee to work out the difference between the two bills. Several conference committees are hard a work right now finalizing versions of bonding, stadium, and budget bills. This year is a bonding year. That work prioritizes construction projects throughout the state. Since the state is showing surpluses again, no spending bills are required this year.
VOTER IDENTIFICATION
This week the House passed a common-sense measure that requires voters to present photo identification on Election the state will issue free photo identification cards to those meeting federal poverty guidelines. In addition, voters living in a residential facility (such as a nursing home) will be exempt from this measure.
MINNESOTA TURNS 148
May 11, 2006 was our state's 148th birthday. On May 11, 1858 Minnesota was officially admitted to the Union by Congress as the 32nd state. Since that time, we've had 44 Governors, 47 Lieutenant Governors, 20 Secretaries of State, 28 Attorneys General, and 17 State Auditors. In the 84 sessions of the Minnesota legislature that have been convened in this time, 242,809 bills were introduced and 43,924 laws were passed!
