"The Minnesota Legislature today approved a $167.5 million disaster relief bill that will help counties, communities, businesses and people rebuild and recover from severe flooding and windstorms during June and July. The bill also continues the Republican focus on reform. We need to better prepare for responding to potential disasters, ensure taxpayer dollars are being used for designated purposes and ensure that any use of reserve funds for this disaster relief will not impede paying back the school shift. Reforms in the bill will return any money not spent to the General Fund and require that recovery loan repayments are returned to the state for a special fund designated for future disaster relief. The bill also implements stricter requirements for loans provided by the Minnesota Investment Fund and requires that disaster relief funds provided by the Minnesota Investment Funds are limited to recovery, not additional economic development projects. Finally it temporarily changes the budget reserve funding formula to ensure that using reserve funds for disaster relief does not impede paying back the school shift. In times of disaster, Minnesota comes together to help those in need. Today we did what we said we would do - provide aid to help these communities recover."
