(ST. PAUL) - Senate Majority Leader David Senjem (R-Rochester) and House Speaker Kurt Zellers (R-Maple Grove) made the following joint statement regarding today’s hearing on the Voter ID amendment case heard at the Minnesota Supreme Court:
"This was an attempt by special interests to prevent the citizens of Minnesota from deciding whether photo identification should be shown to cast a ballot.
The groups seeking to not allow the Voter ID amendment on the ballot, or change the wording in the title in attempt to confuse voters should be an affront to all Minnesotans.
Because the Secretary of State Mark Richie and Attorney General Lori Swanson failed to defend the law the Legislature had to take action to assure the people’s right to vote on this important election reform. These two constitutional officers have defaulted on their duties and let all Minnesotans down in their failure to mount a response to these charges. It was left up to the Minnesota Legislature to represent the interests of the people of Minnesota and defend their right to have a voice on this issue at the ballot box.
At stake in the Supreme Court’s decision is the right of Minnesotans to vote this fall on the issue of election integrity as well as the Minnesota Legislature’s authority to place constitutional questions before the voters in the future."
