NEWS RELEASE

Speaker Zellers on Governor Veto of Tax Relief & Job Creation Act

Governor Dayton just put out his "closed for business" sign across Minnesota. As a result of Governor Dayton’s veto, nursing homes will see no sales tax relief; small businesses will not get their upfront exemption on capital equipment; needed investments in programs that create economic development and private-sector jobs will not take place; and job creation incentives including a veterans job tax credit fall to the wayside.

Job creators around the state spent the 2011 legislative session in fear of Governor Dayton and the Democrat’s job-killing tax increases. This session they waited in vain for any sign of relief. Unfortunately, Governor Dayton and the Democrats in the Minnesota Legislature do not share our goal of making Minnesota a better place to do business.

Small businesses that line the streets of Main Street Minnesota are left in the cold by Governor Dayton once again. He doesn’t owe me an apology or an explanation, but he does owe them.

Republicans worked in earnest with Governor Mark Dayton and his Administration on tax relief this session. After pulling back on a handshake agreement and inexplicably failing to show up at several subsequent meetings, I cannot believe that Governor Dayton is questioning my commitment to negotiate with him in good faith. It is personally offensive and outrageous.

His commissioners made very specific suggestions on what should be in this bill, and I accommodated their suggestions in ordering members to change the bill to suit what I thought represented the Administration’s wishes. It is disrespectful to then see those very things cited as reasons for Governor Dayton’s veto. This disingenuous pocket veto letter erodes my trust and confidence in Governor Dayton and his Administration.
