NEWS RELEASE

Prudent Fiscal Management Results in Budget Surplus

The State of Minnesota received some good news today. The November forecast showed an $876 million surplus for FY12-13. Current law requires that surplus funds be used to refill the cash flow account and build up the state’s budget reserve.

Republican-led fiscal restraint, cost containment and reforms are helping to put the state’s fiscal house back in order.

This forecast shows our faith and thanks should go to the hardworking business women and men of Minnesota. Because of them we have this surplus. If we empower them, we will maintain that growth and avoid future deficits. My faith and support is with these small and medium business owners, not government. This surplus cements my belief, and I will continue to put my time and energy in creating opportunity for private sector economic and job growth.

Republicans in the Minnesota Legislature passed a budget in May 2011 that limited government growth, cut state spending and made long-term structural reforms. We firmly believed this was the right direction for the state, and that job-killing tax increases would only hinder steady economic growth. The budget forecast today proved fiscal restraint and reform work.

If we are to make today’s news permanent, we must continue to keep spending from growing faster than taxpayers can afford and to reform government to make it more efficient and effective. That has been and continues to be our agenda for the 2012 legislative session.

Today’s news is welcome but delivered with a note of caution as the U.S. and global economies are still fragile and could impact the state’s February forecast.

The best remedy for the state budget is economic recovery across our state. Our goal is to create opportunity for investment and growth in the private sector economy, rather than promote uncertainty with talk of tax increases, regulations and burdensome mandates
