NEWS RELEASE

New Year’s Resolutions for Economic Opportunity

ST. PAUL, January 22, 2010 – Following today’s Jobs Task Force meeting, House Republican Minority Leader Kurt Zellers (Maple Grove) and Republican members of the House Jobs Task Force discussed their New Year’s Resolutions to bring job growth and economic prosperity.

“Minnesotans are looking forward to economic recovery and renewed prosperity. It is time for our state government to create the common sense, long-term solutions to provide Minnesotans the economic opportunity and progress they deserve,” said Zellers. “The threat of potential tax increases is creating a pandemic of uncertainty that is crippling the American economy’s recovery. Our resolution – and we are absolutely intent on keeping it – is that Republicans are not going to make it more expensive to be a job provider in Minnesota.”

“When a small business owner tells you he will be hit by the Democrats’ income tax increase, it gets your attention,” said Representative Keith Downey (Edina) of the Democrats’ plan to create a new 9-percent income tax bracket. “If government wants economic growth and job creation, then it needs to get out of the way of businesses doing good business.” The representatives also pointed to their continuing collaboration with job providers to understand the challenges of the current economy and what can be done to help.

Downey also addressed the shortcomings of the Jobs Task Force. “After the very first meeting I asked the Task Force to straighten its focus and look at real reforms with lasting benefits for Minnesota’s job providers. What they need from state government now and in the future are fiscal restraint and reform to address our own budget issues.”

“Speaker Kelliher knows that she led House Democrats through a do-nothing session, and she is trying to cover it up by creating phony ‘task forces’ to give the appearance that she and her caucus know the first thing about fostering a real economic recovery. The only jobs they’re trying to save or create are their own,” said Representative Mark Buesgens (Jordan).
