“GEITHNER-DASCHLE” AMMENDMENT PASSES IN MINNESOTA HOUSE

“If you are going to handle the taxpayer’s dollars, you had better pay your OWN taxes first.” – Rep. Kurt Zellers – (R) Maple Grove

St. Paul, MN – Representative Kurt Zellers – (R-Maple Grove) – The Minnesota Legislature added a bipartisan amendment to a Federal Tax Conformity bill that members hope will send a message to Washington about who should handle the taxpayers money.

What has been dubbed the “Geithner-Daschle” amendment restricts any Governor from appointing a Commissioner of Revenue that has not paid their taxes or has been convicted of a state or federal tax violation. The amendment passed with near unanimous support from the 134 members of the Minnesota House of Representatives, on a vote of 123-5.

Rep. Kurt Zellers (R-Maple Grove), author of the amendment said, “If your job is to collect the hard earned tax dollars from the taxpayer in our state; you had better have your own taxes in order and have a clean record.”

Citing the example of Washington style “politics as usual” rules for everyone else, but not themselves, Zellers said, “Nothing does more to destroy the taxpayer’s trust in their government when politicians make up rules and then break them when it suits their cause.”

Rep. Zellers hopes this will send the message back to Washington about real accountability. “If the federal government won't set the example for us, we'll set it here in Minnesota and hopefully it will spread across the country.”
