NEWS RELEASE

APPLY NOW FOR HIGH SCHOOL PAGE PROGRAM

ST. PAUL – High school juniors who want an inside look at state politics have until December 15 to apply for a spot in the Minnesota House of Representatives High School Page Program.

The High School Page Program is a one-week program that gives students an inside-looking-out view of state government.

“Very few places in the country offer students the chance to see politics and lawmaking like this,” said State Representative Dean Urdahl, R-Grove City. “You get to be right inside, at committee hearings, floor sessions, working with the bill-writing staff, everything. It’s really a great experience.”

During their week at the State Capitol, House Pages will discuss issues with state representatives; meet other constitutional officers, judges, lobbyists and the media, organize and conduct a mock committee; and work directly with legislators on the House floor during House floor sessions.

The program begins March 6, 2006, and runs every week through May 15, 2006. The program is open only to high school juniors. Application packets are available through their high school or by calling the House Educational Programs Office at 651-296-7452. Pages are selected in the fall of each year based on a formal process that includes their application, a faculty recommendation and an essay. All applications must be postmarked by December 15, 2005.

Program participants are responsible for all costs incurred during their week at the Capitol, but each student will receive a stipend to help cover the cost of food and one week’s lodging.
