NEWS RELEASE

URDAHL: BEWARE THE MAIL ORDER BRIDE

State Representative Dean Urdahl (R-Grove City) has a warning for area elderly citizens who think mail order brides may provide comforting companionship: The women may be using you to obtain their U.S. citizenship.

“Elderly men looking for a friendly babushka may end up getting more than they bargained for,” Urdahl said.

According to Urdahl, a man recently spent thousands of dollars traveling to Russia to meet the woman of his dreams. When she returned with him to America, they were married. One month later, she divorced him.

Urdahl believes the woman, like many others who participate in the mail order bride program, may just be using interested men in order to become eligible for their green card. And if losing their soulmate isn’t enough, the men also end up taking a hit in the pocketbook.

“Lonely men enter this program with dreams of companionship, and they end up with disappointment,” Urdahl said. “A word to the wise – obtaining a mail order bride may sound glamorous, but it most likely could lead to aggravation and heartache.”
