Good first week at Capitol

Dear Neighbor,

Week 1 of the 2012 legislative session is drawing to a close. It was a productive week in terms of getting committees going and helping some proposals out of the starting blocks.

We have been working to find ways we can maximize the effectiveness of our tax dollars through efficiency, innovation and redesign. A series of six Local Government Innovation Forums recently took place throughout the state so local leaders could share with us how they already are improvising to meet today’s economic demands and also to find out what more we can do.

This week we released our findings and issued recommendations for greater collaboration across local governments, particularly through the Minnesota Accountable Government Innovation and Collaboration Act (aka the MAGIC Act). Click here for a Pioneer Press article with more about this project.

As for committee work, one House panel approved a bill related to Gov. Dayton's efforts to unionize daycare providers earlier this week. The bill stated that union dues and fair share fees may not be deducted from a parent’s child care assistance payment.

Another House committee approved a bill that would allow a county attorney or assistant county attorney to carry a firearm on duty, provided they have a state-issued permit to carry. This proposal is in response Cook County Attorney Tim Scannell being shot while doing his job at the courthouse.

I will keep you posted as these bills advance through the Legislature. Feel free to provide me with input on these and other issues.

Sincerely,
Dean
