COSMOS HIGHWAY PROJECT ADVANCES IN GRANT PROCESS

ST. PAUL – State Rep. Dean Urdahl, R-Grove City, announces a Highway 4 reconstruction project in Cosmos has advanced through an initial screening in a drive to secure federal grant funding.

Two specific needs identified for Highway 4 include improving its generally poor condition and repairing a leaky water main. Cosmos’ new water tower has increased pressure on the city’s 1930s water main, resulting in more than two dozen leaks in the line which runs beneath the highway.

“I have been in touch with Minnesota’s Public Facilities Authority about addressing the water problem at the same time as the road repair,” Urdahl said. “I also sent a letter to Congressmen Collin Peterson and James Oberstar, urging their support at the federal level. This project is crucial for the people of Cosmos so I want to make sure everyone is on board.”

The Cosmos project may have cleared a preliminary hurdle, but more steps must be completed before the funding is secured. Another United States Dept. of Transportation phase occurs this month and the final application process is scheduled for August.

A Minnesota Dept. of Transportation workgroup conducted the initial review of 27 proposals submitted for consideration under the agency’s Livability and Sustainability Initiative for TIGER II Discretionary Grant Program. The Cosmos project was included in a seven-part package entitled “Livability and Sustainability through the Integration of Complete Streets.” Willmar, Albert Lea, Mankato, Bloomington, Minneapolis-St. Paul and Garrison also are included.
