To the editor:
Independence Day may be a national holiday, but its meaning is just as important locally as a grass-roots celebration of Americana.
The parades, picnics, fireworks and festivals we enjoy are not conducted by the U.S. government; they emerge as the product of local organizations and individuals. We live the freedom and liberty our founding fathers provided and express it in our own local way.
The Fourth also is an opportunity for us to expand or redefine who we are, all while celebrating. Thousands of new citizens use Independence Day to take their oaths of allegiance to the United States; territories made their case for statehood; and people use the day to promote a variety of personal causes.
It is important for us to remember and honor those who put their lives on the line to escape the tyranny of Great Britain, allowing the United States to become the great nation it is today. Sure, we have our troubles, but we Americans also enjoy lives and liberties unique to our nation.
We do not need to be born into the “right” family or belong to the “right” religion to succeed in America. Our children are safe and receive an education. We are asked to vote on significant matters. Our citizens are innocent until proven guilty.
Please remember our veterans and active soldiers on July 4; they made Independence Day possible. A quick thank-you will let them know how much you appreciate their sacrifice.
Have a safe and happy holiday.
Sincerely,
Dean Urdahl
State Representative
