Town hall Saturday in Litch; online survey available

Friends-

The last of my mid-session town hall meetings scheduled in District 18B will take place 9 a.m. Saturday at Main Street Café in Litchfield (226 Sibley Ave. N.). I encourage you to attend for an informal discussion about whatever legislative topics you’d like to address.

I also am seeking input from surveys I’ve distributed in the district. A number of the surveys have been mailed to me, but you can log on to www.house.mn/18B to complete an online version.

Your input is very important to me as we face some big challenges this session. A new state budget forecast was issued Tuesday and we face a $4.6 billion deficit for the 2010-11 fiscal biennium. We would be looking at a $6.4 billion shortfall if not for a total of $1.8 billion in federal stimulus money.

We have some long-term adjustments to make, but the federal aid prevented the state’s immediate bottom line from worsening.

Some people had feared the new forecast would show a deficit in the $6-7 billion range, making the budget plan Gov. Pawlenty issued in January obsolete. The fact we were able to fill in part of the budget hole means his proposal still is relevant in eliminating the shortfall.

Hope to see you Saturday,
Dean
