URDAHL TOURS FLOOD RAVAGED SOUTHEASTERN MINNESOTA

SAINT PAUL – Rep. Dean Urdahl (R-Grove City) recently toured the flood ravaged areas of southeastern Minnesota as part of the Capital Investments committee.

While touring the area Rep. Urdahl commented “It is one thing to see the devastation on TV, but another to see it first hand.” He was astonished by the extensive damage caused by the heavy rains in that part of the state. “All around you experience the sights, sounds and smells of disaster,” Rep. Urdahl stated to his colleagues.

Rep. Urdahl wants to see the federal government live up to their responsibility in the recovery efforts. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has been in the area for a while now, helping those who lost their homes. However, FEMA only assists homeowners and not businesses.

Rep. Urdahl expressed his concern about the lack of support for businesses. “In Rushford 58 out of 70 businesses were destroyed,” stated Rep. Urdahl. “We need to figure out a way to get them back on their feet.” With no federal assistance for to do this, it is likely this issue will be addressed in a special session.

Rep. Urdahl articulated his desire to provide assistance in getting these businesses back on their feet. He noted the discussion about a possible special session, should Governor Pawlenty call one, has been very extensive and many people would like to see several issues addressed. Rep. Urdahl is of the opinion that “if a special session is called, its focal point should be assisting those affected by the flood.”
