GOP ran do-nothing session except when DFL took the lead

Saint Paul, Minnesota – The Minnesota State Legislature adjourned sine die yesterday, ending the 2011-12 legislative biennium. House Minority Leader Paul Thissen released the following statement.

“This session Republicans ran a do-nothing legislature except when Democrats took the lead. While Republicans focused on divisive and partisan constitutional amendments, Democrats focused on jobs and provided the leadership necessary to get something accomplished.

Looking to the future the state faces big challenges. Unfortunately, the Republican-led majority has left a lot of unfinished businesses and unfulfilled promises. After telling Minnesotans they would balance the budget and create jobs, Republicans failed to make good on their word. They increased property taxes on middle class Minnesotans and borrowed billions from our schools, all while protecting corporate special interests. Worse, they didn’t solve our state’s budget problems. Just as we entered 2011, the state faces over $4 billion in red ink due the failure of the Republican-led majority to do its job.

Minnesotans are tired of Republican gridlock and tunnel vision on failed trickle-down policies that squeeze the middle class. Democrats have a positive vision for Minnesota’s future that recognizes that a stronger Minnesota economy will be built with a stronger middle class. That means meaningful tax relief for middle class Minnesotans, paying back our kids and investing in their future, and creating jobs by harnessing the economic power of a strong middle class.”
