Invites GOP to “walk the walk" on paying back our kids
House Minority Leader Paul Thissen (DFL – Minneapolis) released this statement regarding Governor Dayton’s veto of the GOP’s school borrowing bill that drained our state budget reserves while leaving $2 billion in remaining debt to Minnesota schools.
“Republicans deserved an “F” for their school borrowing bill that would have left our kids a $2 billion IOU with no plan to pay them back. That is why it deserved Governor Dayton’s veto.
If paying back our kids is truly a priority and not just political games then we invite Republicans to “walk the walk.” Democrats have introduced a plan to fully pay back our kids by closing corporate tax loopholes. It leaves our budget reserves intact while phasing in a responsible plan to fully pay back our kids.
This is a simple choice. We can choose to make our kids the priority or continue to protect rich corporate interests. In the remaining weeks of session we hope Republicans will work with Governor Dayton and the DFL so that we can together to do right by Minnesota’s kids.”
