Thissen: Republicans taxing the American Dream away from middle class
On a party line vote, Republicans in the House passed a tax bill that would take money from many middle class Minnesotans in order to provide tax relief for corporations and business.
More than 300,000 Minnesotans that earn less than $55,000 per year will see a tax increase in this bill due to cuts to the renters’ credit. Almost 87,000 of these Minnesotans are seniors or disabled renters living. The average tax increase will be $213.
House Minority Leader Paul Thissen (DFL – Minneapolis) made the following statement:
“Once again Republicans are sticking it to the middle class.
In this bill, they are asking seniors, people with disabilities, and middle class Minnesotans to line up and write a check to big corporations. How is raising taxes by $200 on middle class Minnesotans good for our economy? That is $200 that Minnesotans would spend in their community at the grocery store, to pay bills, and to purchase medicine. Some of these Minnesota renters are probably saving up to buy their house in hopes of moving up the economic ladder, but Republicans want to push them back down.
Republicans are literally taxing the American Dream away from the middle class. It is the wrong priorities and it doesn’t make Minnesota a better place."
